Canyonlands
Red Cliff Ranch
Canyonlands
Canyonlands
Colorado River along Hway 128, Canyon Road
(Panoramic view)

With the National Parks closed we traveled a scenic byway today along the red rock and the Colorado River.  It was a beautiful drive with several pull offs and of course I had to take lots of pictures.  Basically the 45 mile drive was unpopulated except for two lodges along the drive.  We stopped over to take a look at the property of one of these.  It was in a valley with the red cliffs overlooking the property.  Horses were grazing in the valley, which help make it very picturesque and very western.  It was the Red Cliff Ranch and Lodge.  It had a restaurant and a winery on the property.  It would be and excellent place to come back and stay.

After driving the Canyon Road, we drove to Dead Horse State Park to go to Dead Horse Point.  This is a viewpoint which is directly across from Canyonlands National Park which gave us a good view of Canyonlands.  Dead horse point has an interesting history on how it got it's name.  In the 1800's cowboys would round up wild horses and would drive them to the point.  They would fence off the point where the horses had no way of escaping.  After the cowboys broke all the horses they needed they would leave the others on the point, corralled in and they died of thirst, thus the name "Dead Horse Point".
